by KOMO News StaffA 15-year-old girl is dead, and three other teenagers were injured in a single-vehicle collision that occurred on SR 534 in Skagit County Tuesday evening. The collision occurred on SR 534 east of Coyote Lane, according to Washington State Patrol .
Troopers said the vehicle struck a utility pole and resulted in an extended closure. A WSP press memo noted three 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old were inside the vehicle at the time of the collision, two of which were boys and two of which were girls. Two of the 15-year-olds were boys, while the remaining 15 and 16-year-olds were girls. The memo also stated the 15-year-old girl who died was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision. Troopers said one of the 15-year-old boys was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital, while the other 15-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were taken to Harborview Medical Center to get their injuries treated. The 15-year-old girl who died was a student at Mount Vernon High School, which prompted the school to release a statement Wednesday to parents that can be read below: It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I reach out to inform you of a tragic car accident that occurred last night and ended the life of one of our students who attended Mount Vernon High School. We are working with the state patrol, our district crisis response team and the local authorities to learn more about the incident and provide support for staff, family and students. We will be informing students who had classes with the impacted teenagers this morning and providing additional counseling and emotional support as needed and necessary. We ask that our community of parents and caregivers grant the family so deeply impacted privacy at this time of crisis. While there are no easy ways to manage grief of the loss of a loved one, the school staff is here to support in the ways that we can. WSP's memo said the 15-year-old male driver is currently under investigation to see if he will face any future charges.
