The bombardment of Angoon on Oct. 26, 1882 killed several children and destroyed all but one of the village’s canoes, which were vital to hunting and fishing, according to Angoon officials. The apology was delivered by members of the U.S Navy, including Rear Adm. Mark Sucato, during a traditional ku.éex’, a traditional Tlingit ceremony. Bombardment remembrance events started at 10 a.m. Saturday in the high school gymnasium.
The event and ceremony commemorates the day in 1942 when the Alcan was complete by black U.S. Army soldiers, who were segregated in the military at the time. The African American soldiers who built the Alcan were paid less than the white soldiers who helped build the highway. The completion of the highway paved the way to desegregation in the military in 1948, said multiple people at the event as well as Sen. Murkowski.
