The Farmers Insurance Open kicks off Wednesday at Torrey Pines Golf Course, but notable absences due to injury and illness impact the tournament's star power. Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler are missing, opening the door for Ludvig Aberg to take center stage as the 9-1 favorite. The tournament will feature a unique schedule, starting on Wednesday and concluding on Saturday to avoid conflict with NFL championship games.
The $9.2 million Farmers Insurance Open is scheduled to begin Wednesday at Torrey Pines Golf Course, facing a shortage of some of its star power due to injuries and illnesses. Xander Schauffele , a San Diego native who has participated in the tournament every year since 2016, will miss this year's event. He withdrew from last week's The American Express in La Quinta for unspecified medical reasons.
Schauffele has only played in one PGA Tour event this year, tying for 30th in the season-opening winners-only The Sentry, which concluded on January 5th. Schauffele holds the second position in the Official World Golf Ranking following a stellar 2024 season where he secured two victories, finished second three times, and achieved 15 top 10 finishes in his 22 PGA Tour starts.Adding to the absence of star players, top-ranked Scottie Scheffler has also been sidelined this season due to a right-hand injury sustained from broken glass while preparing Christmas dinner. These absences have propelled Ludvig Aberg, a 25-year-old Swedish golfer who played at Texas Tech, to become the 9-1 pre-tournament favorite according to FanDuel, the official betting operator of the PGA Tour. Aberg currently ranks sixth in the Official World Golf Ranking. He tied for fifth in The Sentry, his only 2025 start, and finished 16th in the FedExCup standings. In 2024, Aberg boasted eight top 10 finishes, including three second-place finishes, notably in the Masters Tournament where he trailed Scheffler by four strokes. 'San Diego's my favorite place in the world,' Aberg stated at a press conference on Tuesday. 'It's almost like you're looking down at the water and it gives me a little bit of peace.'Fourth-ranked Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, the highest-ranked player in the 156-player field, emerges as the second choice at 11-1. Matsuyama secured a victory at The Sentry, achieving a remarkable 35-under-par 257, the lowest score relative to par in a 72-hole event since the 1983 season. He also triumphed in the 2024 tournament, sinking a birdie on the 72nd hole to win by one stroke over Nicolai Hojgaard in his third start on the PGA Tour after seven seasons on the DP World Tour. 'I think the second year is always kind of the confirmation year,' the 32-year-old stated. 'That was a great rookie one, but now it's time to confirm, it's time to show up again and try to win tournaments.' The tournament field includes four players who attended high school or college in San Diego County: Charley Hoffman (Poway High School), Michael Kim (Torrey Pines High School), Cavin McCall (El Cajon Christian), and J.J. Spaun (San Diego State). Notably, the 48-year-old Hoffman will be making his 27th appearance at The Farmers Insurance Open. His impressive record includes three top 10 finishes—tying for seventh in 2009 and 2014 and tying for ninth in 2020.The winner will receive $1.674 million. For the fourth consecutive year, the tournament will commence on a Wednesday, a day earlier than usual, and conclude on Saturday to avoid conflicting with Sunday's telecasts of the NFL conference championship games, American television's most-watched programming outside of Super Bowl Sunday. Grounds tickets start at $65 on Wednesday and Thursday, $75 on Friday, and $85 on Saturday. Tickets will be dynamically priced and subject to fluctuations based on demand and market variables, according to tournament organizers. Discounted tickets are available for active duty military members, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their dependents on Wednesday and Thursday, along with fans aged 60 and older. Children aged 15 and under receive complimentary admission each day of the tournament when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Each ticketed adult may bring one child. The tournament will be televised on Golf Channel from noon-4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, noon-2 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, and on CBS from 2-5 p.m. on Friday and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday. Additional coverage will be streamed on ESPN+ from 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
