The amendment's supporters worry its vague language has opened the door to misinformation.
Right-wing groups have seized on vague language in a ballot proposal to protect abortion access in New York, arguing that the initiative will open the door to more transgender kids in girls' sports and an erosion of “parents’ rights.”
Elena Chin of Moms for Liberty said she worried that the proposed protections for age and gender would allow more children to transition without parents’ knowledge or consent. She also said she worried it would result in more trans kids playing on girls’ sports teams. “What this proposition will actually do is force spaces and opportunities, including sports, prisons, locker rooms, domestic abuse shelters, any single-sex space meant for women to include men,” Stepman said at the rally.
But she agreed that the language is confusing, and added that the text “does a bit of a disservice to New York voters.” “The central problem with these arguments arises out of the language of the amendment itself,” Judge David Weinstein wrote.
