The age gap romance trope has been thoroughly explored in recent years. From critical approaches to more sympathetic portrayals, there's been a demand for films that inspect romantic relationships, with more mature women falling for their much younger counterparts.
Fantasy Life might be a new addition to the trend, but in turn, it breathes new life into it. Instead of focusing on a sexy fling, it enables two people from opposite realities to find common ground while confronting mental health obstacles. Amanda Peet plays an actress past her prime who struggles with depression, and Matthew Shear plays a laid-off lawyer hardly coping with panic attacks. There is a saying that broken people save broken people, and if an onscreen project could prove that this is true, it would be this one. With less of an emphasis on romance and more on the platonic connection between two lonely individuals, Fantasy Life is a tender reminder that having a friend to rely on in times of need is all that's necessary to carry on. What Is 'Fantasy Life' About? The film opens with Shear's Sam being let go of his paralegal work, only to feel the ramifications of this through panic attacks and intrusive thoughts tied to his OCD. Aware that he needs professional help, the protagonist ends up booking an appointment with a shrink named Fred . After their unhinged therapy session, Sam is asked to babysit for Fred's three granddaughters, an opportunity he reluctantly accepts. It is through caring for these three girls while their musician father heads on tour that he meets and takes a liking to Dianne . Similarly to Sam, she is going through a rough patch, second-guessing her chances at booking roles midlife and struggling with depression ever since she became a mother. With an absent husband and no true friends to support her, Sam's understanding demeanor makes her finally feel seen again. From watching Battlestar Galactica together to reading lines while recording Dianne's audition videos, the two forge a bond that could veer into romantic territory at any given moment. But Fantasy Life opts for an unconventional take on the age gap narrative and instead shows Sam and Dianne accepting their platonic connection and remaining friends. In a way, Sam's babysitting job involuntarily helps him confront his mental health difficulties and find the confidence to get back into dating. As for Dianne, she doesn't have a breakthrough in her acting career but decides to give her marriage a second chance and finds other reasons to continue living. Shear's film might be labeled a rom-com, with certain elements of the genre included in the story here and there, but the self-deprecating humor and sensitivity in the script are what win the audience over. The endgame isn't finding an ideal match, but rather finding meaningful relationships that'll help you overcome adversity. 'Fantasy Life' Is Elevated by Matthew Shear and Amanda Peet With Sam's job loss putting him on edge, the panic attacks he experiences come into full swing. One of them is when he is supervising Dianne and David's daughters, nearly putting their lives at risk. It's tricky to bring scenes like these to the screen without them feeling downplayed, but in Fantasy Life, Shear's performance captures the intensity of Sam's neuroses with caution. The protagonist isn't defined by his mental health barriers, but remains charming and considerate throughout the film in both his interactions with the children and with Dianne. Sam and Dianne's dynamic delivers on the film's feel-good ambiance, even if their chemistry falls short when it comes to the romance. Although Sam starts off as the main character, viewers will be left a little underwhelmed by the fact that much of his healing journey happens off-screen. Peet's return to film after a decade focusing on TV is a worthwhile comeback. From the moment her character is introduced at every end of the film, she steals the spotlight with her winning depiction of an actress trying to revive her passion while sometimes not even finding the urge to get out of bed. It's truly heartbreaking to see her try to confide in a friend about whether she should still focus on acting if she hasn't landed any roles in a while. Instead of receiving encouragement, her doubts are dismissed by the lack of attention she receives from the person sitting across from her. When she is mistaken for another much younger actor when asked for an autograph, the realization that her career is quickly fading cuts her like a knife. It seems like a juxtaposition that Peet, who is an undeniable force on screen, could play a struggling actress wondering if her age has anything to do with it. The hope is that Peet gets to take on even more meaty roles like this, where she can flex her acting skills to their fullest potential. 'Fantasy Life' Marks a Compelling Directorial Debut for Noah Baumbach's Frequent Collaborator Aside from Shear and Peet, Alessandro Nivola doesn't fall behind in his ability to make a cocky musician charismatic. Although he plays a supporting part here, he makes good use of his limited screen time. His character is an interesting foil to Peet's, because despite them being similar in age, he is still busy living out his rock star dreams with no prospect of hitting the brakes. Dianne and David have grown emotionally distant, given his touring schedule, making way for Sam to win Dianne's affection. When David notices that there is much more to the babysitter's connection with his wife, it becomes a reality check about how much he has failed as a partner and as a father. Nivola's banter with Peet allows for the couple's rocky relationship to be both authentic and compelling in a film that largely favors her interactions with Shear. Andrea Martin, Bob Balaban, and Jessica Harper might also round out the ensemble, but they are mere cameo appearances in a script that unfortunately minimizes their roles.
