Fans spent Saturday evening sending prayers and well-wishes for the record-setting former champion.

The South Carolina native began racing in 1957 and called it a career in 1988. In between, he amassed 83 wins and 319 top 10 finishes. He was on the pole 69 times. He won the Daytona 500 a whopping five times, too. So, he was revered in the sport, and Dodson’s tweet got fans’ attention.“Thoughts and prayers for an absolute legend,” another person wrote.

“Thinking of Cale and is family tonight,” another wrote. “He really was the toughest race car driver, John. Thanks for the update.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
