Fans react as Brendan Fraser is reportedly in talks to return to The Mummy franchise with Rachel Weisz for a potential fourth film
The Mummy fans are really looking forward to Brendan Fraser returning to the franchise for a potential fourth film. On Tuesday, November 4, Variety revealed that Fraser, 56, and costar Rachel Weisz are in talks to possibly reunite for the movie.
The fourth The Mummy will be directed by filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are best known for reviving the Scream franchise in 2022. While Fraser and Weisz, 55, have yet to break their silence on the news, fans of the beloved franchise have taken to social media to share their excitement. “I cannot tell you how much this means,” one user wrote via X. “This is like your divorced parents getting back together and it being just as good as you remember. Oh my god.” Other users couldn’t help but gush about how long they have been waiting for the movie to make a comeback. “Wow it’s actually happening. Definitely love seeing Fraser re-enter the blockbuster space amidst his renaissance,” one account shared. “I’m seated. The theater employees are scared and asking me to leave because it ‘hasn’t even started filming yet’ but I’m simply too seated.” Based on the original 1932 film, the 1999 remake — directed by Stephen Sommers — followed adventurer and treasure hunter Rick O’Connell as he travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn Carnahan and Carnahan’s older brother, Jonathan . The franchise made two sequels in 2001 and 2008. Nearly a decade after The Mummy 3, Tom Cruise made a 2017 adaptation of the film with a brand new story — but it didn’t turn out as successful as the original franchise. “It is hard to make that movie,” Fraser told Variety in an October 2022 interview. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun.”“It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie,” he explained to the outlet. “The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary. I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.” Meanwhile, Weisz has also spoken highly about her experience on The Mummy franchise, noting that it was “very, very joyful.” “It was not a heavy going set,” she recalled in an interview with Newsweek in April 2024. “Brendan and John are both just really gorgeous and open-hearted people. I think we had really good chemistry. We really got on and everyone threw their heart and soul into it.” Weisz went on to share that she was drawn to the role of Evelyn in The Mummy because “a lot of the women’s parts were not very interesting” in the 90s. “ was just a very unusual female character,” she told the outlet. “She was a librarian, and she was in the middle of this action movie. She was funny and kind of mischievous and honest.”
