The family of a man kidnapped and strangled in Oakland are outraged by a plea deal offered to the three defendants by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price.
A group of Price recall supporters held a rally Wednesday outside the courthouse ahead of a hearing in the kidnapping and murder of Benjamin Hemmann, who was kidnapped from his home in San Leandro, strangled and then dumped on the side of Redwood Road in Castro Valley in 2021.
The third defendant, Richardo Onteveros, 45, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which could carry a sentence of 15 years to life in prison, Hemmann's sister said the sentences under that plea deal are far too lenient. She's hoping a judge will reject that plea deal. She wants a jury trial."My brother was not at the wrong place at the wrong time," Laurie Henson said. "He was in his home. When these people tied him up... It has changed me.
