Less supernatural but more earth-shattering are the secrets that Andy discovers about his late sister on his own journey from Chicago to Mexico in “Ven.” When he works up the courage to read her journals on the second anniversary of her untimely death, Andy realizes that he doesn’t know nearly as much about his beloved sister—whom he calls “Maggie with diamonds in her eyes”—as he thought:
