A Canadian family's vacation to an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic turned into a nightmare when two members, April and 8-year-old son Oliver Gougeon, died from food poisoning. The lawsuit alleges the resort failed to provide timely medical care and had inadequate sanitary conditions, contributing to the tragedy.

A Canadian family vacation to the Dominican Republic turned into a tragedy when two members, April and 8-year-old son Oliver Gougeon, died from food poisoning contracted at an all-inclusive resort. The lawsuit claims the family ate from the buffet around 9 p.m. on December 28, 2023, and all four members fell violently ill by 6 a.m. the next morning. Stephen Gougeon, the father, and their other son, Wesley, received treatment for two days before being released.

The Gougeons repeatedly requested medical assistance, which went unanswered until later that afternoon. By then, they all required wheelchairs to be transported from their room to the resort's health clinic. At the clinic, they received intravenous treatment and antibiotics before being taken to the hospital by ambulance. Oliver, who was experiencing breathing difficulties, suffered cardiac arrest and died shortly after receiving oxygen and a sedative. April, also battling breathing issues, was placed on a ventilator but became unconscious and died. A Coroner's Report confirmed food poisoning as the secondary cause of death for both April and Oliver. Stephen Gougeon, along with extended family members, filed a civil lawsuit on January 27 against the resort, alleging poor sanitary conditions, inadequate medical care, and staff deficiencies in handling emergencies. The lawsuit names several entities, including Wyndham Hotel Canada II Inc., Air Transat Holidays A.T. Inc., Transat Tours Canada Inc., Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham, and Clinca Canela. The family seeks justice and accountability for the resort's alleged negligence, hoping to prevent other families from experiencing a similar tragedy
