The family of Melanie Hall have expressed their profound fear that they may never learn the identity of the person who murdered their 25-year-old daughter and sister, as a new campaign is launched three decades after her disappearance.
Melanie was last seen at 1:10am on Sunday, June 9, 1996, sitting on a stool at the edge of the dancefloor in Cadillacs nightclub on Walcot Street in Bath, following a night out with friends and her boyfriend. Her remains were discovered 13 years later, on October 5, 2009, by a workman near the northbound slip road of the M5 at junction 14 in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire.
Melanie had suffered extensive head injuries and her body was wrapped in black bin liners tied with blue rope. Her clothing, jewelry, and personal belongings have never been found. The death of the clerical worker, employed at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, remains a mystery even now, as Avon and Somerset Police mark the anniversary with a fresh appeal for information.
The 'Justice for Melanie' campaign urges anyone who was in Bath on the night of her disappearance, when England drew 1-1 with Switzerland in their opening Euro 1996 match, to come forward with any potentially crucial details. Melanie's father, Steve Hall, now 82, and her sister Dominique have spoken of their desperate need for answers after the devastating ordeal the family has endured.
Mr. Hall reflected on the long fight for justice, saying, 'You will always think in the early days that there will be a quick resolution of what has happened. That has not been the case. But we travel in hope. And if it is 30, 40, or 50 years, whatever it takes to come to a conclusion.
I just hope I live long enough to see a conclusion, but we must see what the outcome is.
' He added that the only closure he could get would be if Melanie walked through the door, acknowledging that tragic impossibility. Dominique, nearing 60, described her biggest challenge over the three decades as the possibility that Melanie was scared and frightened in her final moments. She expressed anger that someone chose to take her sister's life at 25, a loss that can never be undone.
The family continues to hope for a change of heart from someone who may have withheld information. Mr. Hall noted that it might be a dying confession or a fallout between partners that could finally bring truth to light. He described the discovery of Melanie's body as a relief because it allowed the investigation to shift from a missing person case to a homicide.
Melanie's mother, Pat, now suffers from advanced dementia, and Mr. Hall believes she gave up when Melanie's remains were found, never being the same afterward. The case remains one of the most haunting mysteries in the region, with police renewing their appeal for anyone with memories or information, no matter how small, to come forward.
