A family of six was found dead in their West Valley City home, with a teenage boy being the sole survivor. Police believe the father shot his family members before taking his own life.
West Valley City police provided an update after a family of six was found dead in their home. The teen was discovered in the garage of the home on Tuesday after a concerned family member entered the home after being unable to make contact with anyone at the residence. The rest of the family - children ages 2, 9, and 11 - and their parents - a 42-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman - were all found dead inside the home.
Roxeanne Vainuku , deputy communications director for the city of West Valley, said investigators believe the father shot each of his family members before turning the gun on himself.However, the investigation is still underway and autopsies have yet to be completed to determine that the cause of death for five of the six family members was from being shot. Vainuku said it's believed the teen boy was shot inside the home, but survived, and had made his way out to the garage. It's not known when the shooting happened. Vainuku said it's believed to have occurred sometime over the weekend, so it's not clear how long the teen had been attempting to get out of the home after presumably being shot in the head.Police are not releasing the individuals' identities publicly yet as they work to ensure their family has been properly notified. Vainuku asked media that had independently confirmed the family members' names to not report them until their next of kin has been contacted
