The alleged mastermind of an encrypted network, known as Ghost, has fronted court after police infiltrated the high-tech system allegedly run from his Sydney home.
The father of a Sydney man, accused of masterminding the underworld’s “unhackable” communications network, broke down in tears as he struggled to come to terms with the accusations against his son, who is being held in prison on dire charges.
A deeply troubled Chi, 70, told reporters he spoke poor English, and the family had migrated from Korea more than 30 years ago. Jung was arrested early on Tuesday by the AFP after they infiltrated the Ghost network allegedly run from his bedroom.“I thought it was gunshots because I didn’t know what I was hearing. It was confusing because we could see police but no ambulance,” said one neighbour.AFP commanders, at a press conference on Wednesday morning, alleged Jung was a “geek” and “driven by profit”.
The Ghost network was infiltrated in March, the AFP say, through Jung’s computers. Ghost unwittingly forwarded more than 120,000 messages to law enforcement before 700 police raided dozens of homes on Tuesday. Habkouk was allegedly using the Ghost phone from Goulburn Supermax prison where he is awaiting trial for allegedly importing a massive amount of heroin. At the same time, police claim, he was trying to import 42 kilograms of cocaine into Sydney.
“We had an hour in which to respond to that threat and pass that information to our state and territory partners to mitigate that threat.”
