OAKLAND — The surviving family members of a Dublin couple murdered by an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputy will receive $36 million in a settlement announced by county authorities.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors agreed to the settlement Tuesday following a lawsuit filed by the family members of Maria and Benson Tran that alleged theirshould’ve been prevented. The suit alleged that now-former deputy Devin Williams failed a psychological test before he was hired.

Just hours after finishing a shift on duty, the deputy drove to the home of his former lover, killing her and her husband couple execution-style in their home as relatives looked on in horror. Interim Alameda County Counsel Andrea Weddle announced on Tuesday that the Board voted 4-0 on March 24 to agree to the settlement with the Tran family for $36 million.

Supervisor David Haubert was absent.revealed that Williams had received a “D. Not Suited” rating during a psychological exam to determine whether he was employable. The sheriff’s office, under then-Sheriff Greg Ahern, hired him despite that. At Williams’ trial, authorities said Williams was a jealous lover and often became enraged. Authorities said he became obsessed with Maria Tran while the two had an affair in the months leading up to the shooting.

In one text to Maria Tran, he once threatened to “break in” her home and also once texted her that “you’re gonna make me do something stupid. ” The judge called the emergency call — during which Tran’s family members could be heard wailing amid gunfire — “the worst 911 call I’ve ever heard on a case. ” Four other people were in the home, including Tran’s son and a child.
