A 44-year-old woman is facing charges in the brutal beating death of a 70-year-old Elyria man. Daniel Powers' family remembers him as a devoted sports fan and hardworking truck driver. They say he was a loving father of four who instilled a passion for fishing and cheering on his children at countless football games. However, his final days were spent clinging to life at University Hospital in Cleveland. Daniel Powers died on February 25, 2024, after being removed from life support.
He survived another week but was pronounced brain dead. His son, Jack Powers, believes 44-year-old Jennifer Martin is responsible for his father's death. Jack had expressed concerns about the relationship ever since Martin moved in with Daniel Powers, noting constant arguments, particularly about money. According to police, a roommate reported that Martin frequently hit Powers, sometimes grabbing him by the neck, but he never retaliated against her. On February 17, 2024, the roommate heard the couple arguing and found Martin on top of Powers, pinning him to the floor. Daniel's son, Dan Powers, stated that his father had a broken nose, a black eye, and bruises all over his body. Martin was extradited back to Ohio. On January 14, she was arrested and charged with murder and felonious assault. While the family finds solace in Martin's arrest, it cannot replace the time lost with their beloved father. Jack Powers shared the heartbreak of his newborn baby, only 11 months old, never getting to meet his grandfather. Martin's preliminary hearing was held on Wednesday.
