A Sullivan County jury has convicted a woman in the death of a newborn baby who didn't receive medical care.
According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry, Brigitte Meckes , of New York, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and related offenses for failure to summon professional medical help for an ailing newborn baby following a home birth in 2022.
Meckes was a friend of the child’s parents and acted as a midwife for the birth on or around Jan. 15, 2022. Shortly after the birth, the baby showed signs of severe distress. Drew and Amy Hoenigke, were aware of the child’s dire condition, authorities said. Text message evidence showed the three were aware the baby was dying, but no one called 911 for help.
Authorities said Meckes, who was not licensed to practice medical care, used unconventional methods to "treat” the child. The baby died about two days later.to their respective roles. Meckes will be sentenced at a later date. “The death of this purely innocent baby boy is a tragedy beyond words — a tragedy that is compounded by the fact that it could have been prevented,” Attorney General Henry said. “This defendant, along with the child’s parents, knew the baby was in serious medical trouble and did nothing to help him. Instead, they allowed him to die and only contacted emergency responders after the baby was deceased.
