Federal inmate Eric Hafner is throwing his hat in the ring again to run in the U.S. House race against incumbent Rep. Nick Begich
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Federal inmate Eric Hafner is throwing his hat in the ring again to run in the U.S. House race against incumbent Rep.
Nick Begich III, joining his mother who is running in a separate race. Hafner — who is running as a Democrat — was convicted in 2022 of threatening to kill judges, police officers and others, along with making false bomb threats and was sentenced to serve 20 years in federal prison. , during his first attempt to run for the House seat.
“I’m innocent of all charges, and the system is scared to have me out there because ultimately, I’m somebody who’s a threat to the status quo. I’m fighting for regular working-class families. Hafner made headlines in 2024 when he ran for the U.S. House seat against Mary Peltola and Begich. The Alaska Democrats filed a lawsuit against the state Division of Elections to have Hafner’s name removed from the ballot.
The Alaska Supreme Court that Hafner could remain on Alaska’s U.S. House ballot. He was able to make it past the primary contest to the final ballot. On Monday morning, Hafner filed for the U.S. Representative seat as a Democrat. Hafner isn’t the only one in the family who is running in the race.
His mother, Carol “Kitty” Hafner, filed as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate race. Carol Hafner, like her son, does not live in Alaska. Her filing address, the same as her son’s, comes from South Dakota. In 2018, she ran for Alaska’s U.S. House seat.
In the Democratic primary, she earned nearly 15% of the vote, trailing behind Dimitri Shein and Alyse Galvin. Incumbent Republican Nick Begich
