Dozens of North Carolina parents came to Raleigh to urge Republican legislators to fully fund scholarships for children to attend private and religious schools. A state budget provision last year ended income caps to qualify for the Opportunity Scholarship program, but there wasn't enough money to cover soaring demand.
Rachel Brady, a Wake Forest resident who helped organize the rally, calls on the North Carolina General Assembly to fully fund private school scholarships at Halifax Mall in Raleigh , N.C., on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The rally was a grassroots effort to speak out on the waitlist for North Carolina ’s Opportunity Scholarship, Brady said. Parents gather at the rally to listen to speakers call on state lawmakers to increase funding for private school scholarships at Halifax Mall in Raleigh , N.C.
The gathering behind the Legislative Building came as the House convened to consider overriding three vetoed bills unrelated to the scholarships. Senators, however, declined to take any actions this week. The legislature’s next scheduled meetings are in early September.that allocated $488 million to cover the program and another private-education funding initiative.
The delay already has affected families, according to Wednesday’s speakers, who have either pulled their children out of private school enrollment this fall because scholarships haven’t come through or who feel the pinch of paying more tuition from their own wallets. Lawmakers “gave us hope that we were getting this money. So we stuck it out,” Foskey said, adding that with the first school payments due Aug. 15, “we had to sacrifice quite a bit.”
