When he returns, Ramon Laureano will have missed the A’s first 27 games serving a ban that ended his 2021 season on Aug. 4.
After opening the season with a slew of high-profile departures, the A’s are getting close to bringing a big-name player back to the fold.
Laureano, 27, will be a welcome addition to an A’s roster that has undergone massive turnover since the outfielder tested positive for using nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. Only three players in the A’s lineup on Tuesday night against the Giants — Tony Kemp, Elvis Andrus and Sean Murphy — played for the A’s in their 5-4 win over the Padres in Laureano’s last appearance in the majors.
Laureano’s presence should help. He was an All-Star candidate last season before a strained right hip landed him on the IL. He’s given the A’s lineup a little bit of everything since he forced his way onto the roster during the 2018 season. He’s batted in every spot of the order and has produced a career .
Laureano and Pache, it turns out, already have a working relationship. The duo is from the same part of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, and met during the offseason before Pache was traded from the Braves to the A’s as part of the Olson trade. Stephen Piscotty, who figures to be part of Kotsay’s shuffle, said he’d play anywhere in order to stay in the lineup. He’s also one of many teammates looking forward to having Laureano back.
