The fall equinox can vary between Sept 21-24 from year to year. Here's why that happens and a look at exactly when fall starts this year.

Meteorological fall started nearly three weeks ago, on Sept. 1. However, the traditional start of the season doesn’t begin until this weekend. Here’s everything you should know about the upcoming equinox. What does it mean? The fall equinox actually has nothing to do with temperatures cooling off. It all has to do with how the Earth lines up with the sun. The Earth ’s axis of rotation is naturally tilted.

” With that in mind, you would think that the fall equinox would result in exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness across the globe. However, that is not actually the case. Here in San Antonio, the sun will rise at 7:22 a.m. and set at 7:29 p.m. on Sunday, giving us 12 hours and 7 minutes of daylight. Where does that extra 7 minutes come from? This happens because the Earth’s atmosphere refracts, or bends, sunlight.
