Melanie Evans, the Australian CEO of Dutch banking behemoth ING, says young people who want to get ahead should be ready to put in some hard work.

there is no substitute for learning, applying yourself, understanding something deeply and “doing the hard yards”.“I think it’s one of the most overused and most damaging terms to offer to any young person who has any sense of ambition, and desire to actually do a great job.“Life is not about faking it. It’s about applying yourself, it’s about learning new things. It’s about working hard and putting your head down and doing the hard yards. You can’t fake that in business.

She told young executives to work on an elevator pitch if they have an idea they would like to share., before moving to funds management at BT. She then moved to Westpac as chief of staff for former CEO Brian Hartzer, then an executive role at ING before becoming chief executive in 2020. Each of her roles taught her something valuable, even her first job at McDonald’s, where she learnt about customer service, marketing and organisational systems in a “multi-million dollar business”.“Handing out hamburgers is a little different to handing out cash and cheques. But fundamentally, it’s about providing a great experience and working around problems and working in a system and representing the brand and getting to know your regular customers,” she said.

“I knew if I wanted to really be a great business leader, understanding tax law, transfer pricing, all of that stuff was absolutely critical,” she said. “No one told me to do it. It was something that I just I started to realise, watching how the bank worked. It was three years at night, Tuesdays and Thursday nights.”The ING CEO also highlighted the importance of sponsors in addition to mentors outside the organisation in your career.
