Fake IDs are becoming increasingly sophisticated and prevalent in Utah, prompting bars to heighten security measures and raise awareness among staff.
SugarHouse Pub stated through its attorney, Tanner Lenart, that the establishment IDs every customer entering using a state-approved scanning device. Any customer who fails an ID check is denied entry. The bar emphasized the sophistication of fake IDs and urged other bar owners to be more vigilant. SugarHouse Pub is temporarily closed due to an emergency order from the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) suspending the bar’s liquor license.
Hillary Koellner, spokesperson for the Utah Department of Public Safety, said that fake IDs are becoming more prevalent, with technology making them more accessible and advanced. Dave Morris, co-owner of Handlebar and other establishments, has noticed an increase in fake ID use. He trains his door staff to use ID scanners as a tool and not rely solely on them. If an out-of-state ID is presented and the person appears younger than 25, Morris advises his staff to be suspicious. If a fake ID is suspected, staff will usually challenge the person, who often leaves. At Hopkins Brewing Company, if a suspicious ID is encountered, staff will quiz the individual about the card's information to determine if they are using a friend's ID. Their scanner also keeps notes on file, alerting staff if someone previously banned from the bar attempts to return
