BREAKING Estimated size of Fairview Fire doubles to more than 19,000 acres as firefighters continue battling through the night to protect homes in Hemet
More than three days after it first broke out, the fire continues to spread dangerously. The Wednesday night estimate of more than 19,000 acres was nearly double what the acreage estimate had been earlier in the same say. And the evacuation areas continued to expand into the afternoon and evening Wednesday.
"This fire was moving in an opposite direction that it would normally do on a typical day this time of year," said Josh Ansen, Cal Fire's incident commander for the fire. "So instead of a... southwest wind it was coming out of the east and pushed that fire to the west down Avery Canyon." Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for a wide area south of Stetson Avenue, north of Cactus Valley Road, west of Bautista Canyon and east of State Street. Another evacuation order was issued late Wednesday was for the area west of Wilson Way, south of Highway 74, east of Fairview Avenue and north of Stetson. A road closure was issued for Highway 74 from Mountain Center to Borco Street.
