) - More than $12.5 million dollars in capital improvement projects will soon be wrapping up in Fairhope. While that happens, there will be continued detours and closures. Veterans Drive will stay closed until pavers go down at the new roundabout and south beach at the Working Waterfront still has a few weeks’ worth of work left, too.

Initial paving has been completed and two-thirds of it is already open to motorists. Veterans Drive will remain closed to allow the contractor an area to offload and stage the pavers which still need to be installed in the inner circle. “Hopefully those will start arriving this week and I think we’ll see those installed next week,” said Fairhope City Engineer on Monday, September 22, 2025. “That will be done under traffic so that doesn’t involve any closures, and our contractor’s worked so well with us, he’s going to come back and do final paving and striping at night.” It’s a $1.6 million-dollar project, primarily funded by the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization. At the waterfront, the contractor is getting ready to lay sod throughout the south beach area of the working waterfront. “We used to honestly, walk down there too, so we look forward to and so, we look forward to getting back down there,” said Fairhope resident, Mike Williams. Williams and his wife, Lisa stopped on the bluff overlooking the south beach park for a break from their walk. From their vantage point, it was easy to see what has been done. The walking paths and restroom facilities are finished, and crews will begin laying grass this week with the hopes to have the fence down and park open to visitors by the end of October. It’s the last phase of the $11-million-dollar Working Waterfront project which has been under construction for the last year. Restore ACT funds are covering $10 million of that cast with the city picking up the rest. “It looks and feels just like it always has but it has new underpinnings of infrastructure and some environmentally sound improvements from the parking pavers that are pervious, that treat the stormwater to giving the asphalt a diet and just really giving it a freshening up and not a wholesale change,” Johnson explained. While most reaction to the changes has been positive, there were others who thought there should have been more artistic consideration given. “I think they’re catering for the community at large, their own community. I mean, Fairhope as it is, but I mean, I’m blessed that they’re catering for those who come to visit for a day and I’m one of those that come to visit for a day,” Annie Barber said. “If you’re going to do some kind on improvement on infrastructure, then our town is known for its arts and creativity and there was no reason not to include that more so in this project,” countered Fairhope resident, Lisa LaTourette. There will be a new staircase and switchback trail for the mobility impaired which will connect the bluff above to the south beach park below. Rolin Construction said that won’t likely be finished until the end of the year.Southwest Alabama municipal runoff election resultsArrest report: Intoxicated South Alabama student bit officer
