The corner of Section Street and Fairhope Avenue where the iconic Fairhope clock usually stands is under construction to create a new plaza on Oct. 3, 2023. The project's planned finish date is Nov. 1.During a city construction project, Fairhope’s downtown clock seemingly vanished into thin air. But not to worry, the city says, the tourist attraction will be back just in time for the holidays.

Paige Crawford, a city spokesperson, said the project’s deadline is currently Nov. 1, giving the city enough time to prepare for its first holiday event. The Lighting of the Trees, an annual city celebration, is set for Nov. 16 in downtown Fairhope. The clock was taken down in early September as part of the ongoing project to create a picturesque plaza area around the clock at the corner of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street.Mockups provided by the city show new landscaping and seating areas.

“The goal for the project is to soften the property and to incorporate a lot of the landscaping that you already see throughout town” Crawford said. “The radial nature of the site design is reflective of the circular forms of the intersections throughout downtown Fairhope and pays homage to the Fairhope clock.”
