A debate erupted during the Fairhope City Council meeting regarding the selection process for the newest member of the Fairhope Public Library Board, Gustavo Donaihi. Council members questioned the interview process and requested more information before approving the appointment, while another council member expressed familiarity with the appointee. This occurred amidst controversy over the library's refusal to remove certain books, leading to the state library board denying funds.

Gustavo Donaihi was selected from 10 applicants and then confirmed by the city council to become the newest member of the Fairhope Public Library Board . It was the final item on Monday night's Fairhope City Council agenda.

.. the appointment of a new library board member... something that would hardly raise an eyebrow in most towns."I didn't know about this beforehand. It's not like I was planning in the shadows," started council member Joshua Gannon. "I just sent an e-mail including Jimmy and said, hey can I have information on the process? I just haven't received that information so I don't feel like I can make an informed vote when I don't understand the process that was chosen in it." "When did she invite you to the library to come talk to her?" asked council member Andrea Faust Booth."I was just curious," replied Faust Booth. The council was being asked to approve the library trustees' selection of Gustavo Donaihi to the library board when a spirited discussion broke out between council members Joshua Gammon and Andrea Faust Booth about the selection process. with Gammon saying he wanted to know more the interview process and questions asked before voting on Donaihi's appointment. "So, I asked for the specific questions and responses and the overall score given to each one..." state Gammon."Is that pretty much the legal definition?"According to the city attorney, it's the board's decision, one then forwarded to the mayor to present to the council for a thumbs up or thumbs down."Gustavo has spoken before this body many, many times. So, for me, I am familiar with him and how eloquent he specks and how educated he strikes me as being, and that is why, me personally, I'm comfortable. ..." The unusual scrutiny follows a decision by the state library board to deny funds to the Fairhope Library as punishment for not removing some book the state board decided were inappropriate for young readers... leaving many in the community crying censorship and triggering an outpouring of support for the library... a literary battle that received national attention."One abstention, ok. Appointment carries. Thank you." And with that, Gustavo Donaihi became Fairhope Library's newest board member out of 10 applicants, an unusually large number for such a position, says board of trustees' chairman Randal Write. "We then met as an executive session to discuss the 10 people and make the decision about each one that we thought would be the best person to support our library, " she says, " and who has a passion and was very articulate about how they felt about the library and reading and just supporting the library. And Gustavo Donaihi just rose to the top. And we're just thrilled that he is now going to be a part of our board."Ms. Wright says they have no doubt that the battle with the state was the reason why so many people applied for the position. It was an online ad that offered an opportunity for sex at a price. And it came with one, a costly price for those who engaged the ad, made a deal and showed upAccording to the Mobile Co.
