Heavy rainfall caused significant embankment loss and drainage failure on Section Street in Fairhope, Alabama, forcing its closure. The city council authorized contracts for emergency repairs, including engineering services and general contracting. The repairs will involve replacing damaged pipes with concrete and lining the remaining pipes with fiberglass for long-term durability.
The Fairhope City Council authorized two contracts on Monday for emergency repairs to Section Street after a portion of the road sustained damage from heavy rainfall .“As you know, we had a pretty active series of rain events over the last 72 hours of the weekend, especially on late Saturday night and early Sunday morning,” said Richard Johnson with the City of Fairhope .
“Depending on which rain gauge you look at, there was about 4-to-5-inches of rainfall in a relatively short period of time that caused Section Street at Big Mouth Gully, which is there at the intersection of Bayou south of that, to become overwhelmed,” said Johnson. “Turns out there's double HDPE, which is a plastic pipe at a pretty good depth, about twenty feet that were suffering joint failures well before this event, but this event put it over the top. We just had a complete catastrophic failure to the point that the pipes have collapsed at the upstream side of that crossing, so a fix is required,” he said.
