Robert Theodore Sanford Jr., 37, pleaded guilty this week to charges stemming from a bribery scheme at the Fairfax County jail.
A Fairfax County sheriff’s deputy accepted bribes to smuggle narcotics and opioids into the county jail over a six-month period, a crime in which he was charged in April and that he pleaded guilty to this week, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Court documents show that Sanford would use privileged information he received as a deputy, such as planned searches and inmate records, to protect the drug operation. It wasn’t until the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office searched Sanford’s co-conspirator that officials learned of the enterprise. Smallwood had been in the Fairfax County jail since 2020 on unrelated robbery and fraud charges. A lawyer for Smallwood declined to comment on additional charges he faces in this case.
Outside the jail, authorities said, the deputy would sell drugs to women working as prostitutes in an apartment that Sanford leased. Sanford said to Smallwood at multiple points that he would procure drugs for the women, texting at one point, “I can make a mil easy.”. “A corrupt correctional officer — who provided drugs to inmates and gave them inside security info — is dangerous and undermined the rule of law.
