Fairbanks student gives Vietnam War helicopter a makeover for Eagle Scout project

The project involved returning the Huey helicopter to its original drab green coloring.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A Vietnam War-era helicopter will be back on display beginning Thursday at Fort Wainwright ’s front gate, after a Fairbanks student repainted it.

Returning the Huey helicopter to its’ original drab green color serves as 16-year-old Mary Burke’s community service project, as the Monroe Catholic High School junior works toward becoming an Eagle Scout.“We’ve been here since November. Working on it almost every single day and for many hours. It’s definitely, it’s taken a minute,” she said.

Burke says she after seeing the helicopter’s state of disrepair, and understanding its’ historic significance, she wanted to pursue the project because of felt it deserved better care.“I’ve spent hours on hours, and my mom and dad and volunteers, and my sister and everyone has spent like their time on here every day and this has been the thing that we wanted to finish for so long.
