Residents, unions and local politicians urge current legislators to override Gov. Dunleavy's veto of SB 140.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Both before and after Gov. Dunleavy vetoed SB 140, residents have urged the legislature to override the veto.

Others testified and expressed praise for the legislators that voted in favor of SB 140. They also cited the importance of the bill which would provide the Fairbanks North Star School District with about $17 million. Those funds would have gone towards dramatically reducing the $29 million budget deficit faced by the school district. But now, those funds have been tentatively lost.

“In 2021-2022 we experienced such a drastic outmigration of OB/GYN’s that had to shutter it’s department for more than a year,” Lewis said. “The common thread among everybody I knew including just families that left was kids, it was childcare and education.” Prior to the veto being announced both residents echoed sentiments of a need to override a potential veto which the legislature failed to do after a similar bill was vetoed last year. “Please continue to fight for SB 140 even if it comes to overriding a veto,” said Lewis. “I urge you to please, please standby your votes, especially in the event of a governor’s veto,” Payne said.
