Bringing health care to the local community was the focus of the 18th annual Companeros en Salud Health Festival Saturday at the Prisco Community Center in Aurora.

For four hours, blood pressure, glucose and other health screenings were offered in addition to breakfast, community resources, prizes and more.New this year was a sponsorship from Xfinity, which was offering low-cost internet and phone service for people in need in specific counties. In addition, Blue-Cross/Blue Shield brought boxes of healthy food including fruit, vegetables and more that visitors could take home.

“There will be information about total cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose testing and what do those numbers mean for chronic health conditions that individuals can face in the future as well as putting individuals at risk for different health conditions,” she said. “That way when participants get their results in the mail they’ll know what to do with them and what steps to take.

Laura Martinez, who serves as the chairwoman of the fair, said it “was originally for the Hispanic community only to give them resources and bring more health awareness” but is open to all. “We’re hoping the number comes up and a lot of people register at the last minute. We’re hoping for about 130 people,” she said before the event.Attendance early Saturday morning was steady as most of the screening stations had people receiving services.
