A NASA solar observatory captured a massive 'failed' solar eruption that ultimately succumbed to the sun's immense gravity.

Surprisingly, such large flares don’t always escape the Sun’s gravitational pull. Close inspection of the footage shows that the solar material from the massive eruption flew outwards before crashing back into the sun’s surface.Solar flares occur when electromagnetic radiation from the surface of the Sunbursts out into the cosmos. They are the Sun’s largest, most explosive events, and they send electromagnetic radiation hurtling towards Earth and our solar system’s other planets.

“A gorgeous #SolarFlare on the Sun today! Just look at how the falling plasma impacts and flows down the magnetic field – physics in action,” he wrote.on the Sun today! Just look at how the falling plasma impacts and flows down the magnetic field – physics in action.“As further data becomes available, it looks like this event is a prime example of a ‘failed eruption’! Material attempted to leave the Sun, but didn’t quite escape,” French added in an update.

The NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory was launched in a geosynchronous orbit around Earth in 2010 and it has been observing the Sun ever since. The space observatory, developed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, is expected to stay operational beyond 2030.The SDO’s main instruments are the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment , the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager , and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly .

An M-class solar flare led to the impressive northern lights event last month, which allowed many to see the phenomena at lower latitudes than usual., the recent event was an M4.8 class flare. However, this event didn’t escape the Sun’s gravity, meaning it won’t create vast northern lights.
