Alabama Possible is encouraging high school seniors to fill out the FAFSA form to access potentially thousands of dollars in Pell grant money. With a 30-minute application process and a high likelihood of eligibility, officials emphasize the importance of applying before the deadline.
High school seniors are home for the holidays, and officials are encouraging them to fill out the FAFSA form now in order to help pay for college. Your child could receive thousands in free Pell grant money that they don’t have to pay back. Alabama Possible says this year’s form takes roughly 30 minutes to fill out. Typically in Alabama, only about 35,000 students take the time to fill out the form each year.
Chandra Scott, the executive Director of Alabama Possible says you are most likely eligible for the Maximum Pell grant amount of $7,395 if you live in Alabama. “We’re the 7th poorest state in the nation,” Scotts says. “So we know that there are a lot of students who are eligible to take advantage of the Pell grant, and they’re not doing so. And so that is always our push, especially around this time of the year, because this is the time that you have downtime to get forms done.” Scott says last year, Alabama students took advantage of roughly $90 million in Pell grant money just by filling out the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. She says that’s about 60% of students eligible in our state. Remember, both the student and parent or guardian have to create an FSA ID account when filling out the FAFSA form
