Suncorp Stadium is set for a facelift, with thousands of distinctive red and yellow seats to be replaced after two decades of use.

will mark its 20th anniversary at the start of this monthStadiums Queensland documents obtained through Right to Information legislation reveal plans to replace 30,000 of the stadium’s seats – about 57 per cent of its capacity.

“Planning for replacement seating at Suncorp Stadium is at a very early stage, with seat style and cost options under investigation,” he said. Suncorp Stadium designer David Johnston says the colour of its seats was inspired by Queensland’s shifting sands. Most of the existing 52,500 seats have been in situ since the rebuilt stadium opened in 2003. At that time, the upper tiers of the western, northern and southern stands used seats from the surviving western stand, which was completed in 1994.

“That was the inspiration behind the patterns in the seats. Up until we did this in 2003, most people would write the name of the home team in their seats.“People often ask about the pattern in the seats. I’ve been on a tour here and the person giving it told someone something [about the pattern] and I’ve gone, ‘I’ve not heard that version before’,” Johnston said.

If it were ever to host the men’s version, its 52,500 capacity would rule out any semi-final being held in Brisbane – FIFA requirements dictate minimum capacities of 40,000 for group matches, 60,000 for semi-finals and 80,000 for the final and opening match.
