Fact check: Rep. Joaquin Castro blames Trump and Biden for fire that killed 39 immigrants in Mexico
An altar with candles and photos covers the fence outside the Mexican immigration detention center that was the site of a deadly fire, as migrants wake up after spending the night on the sidewalk in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Thursday, March 30, 2023.“Title 42 and other Trump-era holdovers are forcing migrants into dangerous, overcrowded conditions in Mexico.” — U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro.
Castro, a San Antonio Democrat, made the claim in a March 28 tweet in reference to a fire in a migrant center that killed 39 immigrant men. Some of them were waiting for an appointment to apply for asylum in the U.S.; others were sent to Mexico after they reached the U.S. seeking entry.Experts say Castro is right. U.S. immigration policies influence conditions in northern Mexican border towns.
“In way, you could blame all three: Trump, Biden and the Mexican authorities almost equally,” said Howard Campbell, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Texas at El Paso.PolitiFact is a fact-checking project to help you sort out fact from fiction in politics.
