Ohio's law banning abortion six weeks into pregnancy does contain a health exemption, although the Issue 1 campaign says it's not practicable.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new ad from the campaign trying to pass State Issue 1, the abortion-rights amendment, says that Ohio’s “abortion ban” doesn’t include an exception for the “health of the mother.”
Fact check: Anti-abortion campaign says amendment would allow kids’ sex changes, rapists to force abortions “This is insane. That’s why I’m voting yes on , to stop government from passing these extreme abortion bans.”In an interview, Gabe Mann, a spokesperson for Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights, said the ad references the “heartbeat” law,
Mann contended the exemption as written is impracticable. In the confusing months after the heartbeat bill temporarily went into effect, shared the story of an Ohio cancer patient whose oncologist wouldn’t provide a letter saying she should get an abortion, so she traveled out of state to obtain one to get chemotherapy, as well as the infamous example of the 10-year-old Columbus girl who got pregnant as a result of rape.
Amy Natoce, a spokesperson for the anti-Issue 1 group Protect Women Ohio, said the ad is dishonest. Natoce said it’s part of a broader attempt to inaccurately describe the heartbeat law,“They are clearly lying about Issue 1 to build support among Ohioans because they know how unpopular they are,” Natoce said. The “yes” campaign said the ad, by describing “Ohio laws” that “don’t have exceptions for things like rape or for the health of the mother,” also references other state laws.
