A longtime rumor that ABC News banned patriotic symbols on air, along with the claim that President Barack Obama prohibited flag lapel pins, is false.
Some journalists exhibited their patriotism by wearing flag pins on their clothing despite ethical concerns.in 2002 about his decision to wear an American flag on his lapel.
"It told you things that I think are not attractive about the attitudes in newsrooms in some places around our country, and the attitude was that it was inappropriate journalistically to wear an American flag lapel pin, because it was ... deemed a symbol of some political administration. It was deemed to be jingoistic and all those things. Now that, I think, is ridiculous," Hume told PBS' Terence Smith.
Conservative news website Townhall published a story in 2003 about a"Nightline" episode focused on media and patriotism, including a discussion of ABC News' alleged decision to ban flag pins for reporters.
