My husband and I have been married for 5 years, and we are ready to have children. We have found the perfect job and community to raise a family. We’d been trying for 9 months with no luck, so we scheduled a reproductive endocrinology appointment. It turned out that I was fine but that my husband has zero sperm in his semen, otherwise known as azoospermia. We are now seeing a specialist that deals with male infertility to find out the cause.
One scenario is that he has a blockage that just prevents sperm from being released, which would allow us to do IVF. But in the worst case scenarios, he really has no sperm at all, which means no baby. I’m preparing for the worst and trying not to get my hopes up. My husband does not want to pursue a sperm donor. He feels that he would be resentful of our child, since it would only be biologically mine. He is for adoption through foster care, but I have some concerns about that route. There are so many ways fostering is a heartbreaking experience and I’m just not sure yet how I feel about it. It feels wrong to have another person’s child fill a void in my heart. I’m an emotionally distant person and I’m not sure how to give a home to a child that has undergone trauma. I’m worried about resenting my husband if I can’t get pregnant with him, one way or another. I’ve even thought about leaving my husband so I can pursue having a child of my own. I know it’s not his fault and there isn’t anything that can be changed. My question is: how do I continue to go forward when my whole life’s dream has been destroyed
