Facebook's new Workplace features could address the social isolation associated with remote work, and win it a long-term revenue opportunity

Workplace's social tools are intended to solve the long-term need for companies to maintain culture and workplace rapport while working remotely. Zuckerberg said the new Workplace tools are "all about the feeling of presence," and that "it's really important to take a long-term approach to how we think about remote work because this is fundamentally about changing our culture.

Loneliness was most frequently cited, tied with collaboration and communication, by remote workers worldwide as their biggest struggle with working remotely,a survey conducted by Buffer and AngelList in early 2020 — issues that almost certainly have been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. One of the biggest unknowns facing Workplace, however, is whether a problem that stems from technology can be solved with more technology.

Put in more concrete terms: Even if Oculus for Business and Work Groups offer more "natural" workplace interaction environments, participation is still fundamentally predicated on spending more time in virtual worlds, with interactions mediated by screens. Facebook's ability to deliver on the bigger promise of Workplace will depend on the extent to which its technology can develop such that the tech itself fades into the background.
