Facebook could block news in Canada over revenue-sharing bill, exec says via nationalpost
Rachel Curran, the public policy manager for Canada at Meta, Facebook’s parent company, was asked at a parliamentary committee whether the company could repeat what it did in Australia last year in response to similar legislation, when it temporarily prohibited news content on Facebook.earlier this month. Aimed at Google and Facebook, the bill would force them to negotiate commercial deals for news revenue-sharing with Canadian publishers.
Paul Deegan, CEO of News Media Canada, an industry group representing newspaper and digital publishers, said in an email in response to Curran’s comments that the “Australians didn’t stand for this and neither will Canadians, especially in the middle of a global pandemic when they are relying on trusted news sources.”
Michele Austin, Twitter’s director of public policy for the U.S. and Canada, told the House of Commons public safety committee that the company still didn’t know whether Twitter would be covered by Bill C-18. Austin noted that when a user clicks on news content on Twitter, they have to leave the site, which is “not necessarily the case with the other platforms.”Article content
