Just shy of the end of the school year, schools in New York will be allowed to decide if masks are necessary for children and staff during outside activities

, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

The incremental shift in state guidance is an attempt to align the published guidance for summer camps in New York with current school guidance. Presently,On Friday, New York’s health commissioner, Howard Zucker, sent a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying the state wished to align the two sets of rules and loosen mask requirements indoors at schools, which is a departure from.

The CDC responded to the state’s request, said Mr. Cuomo, and the agency wasn’t comfortable allowing children to go maskless inside for the remainder of the school year. It isn’t possible to square the state’s school and camp regulations at this time, said Mr. Cuomo. “If people don’t think the rules are logical, then they’re not going to want to follow the rules,” the governor said during a press conference. “If you can go to camp and run around and play volleyball and not wear a mask, you in the playground in school, you can not wear a mask.
