We break down this week's PerryMason with the Gallardos, FabrizioGuido1 and Peter Mendoza, who chat about preparing for the period piece and how the show's timeline resonates with modern issues:

Warning: SPOILERS for Perry Mason "Chapter Thirteen."Season 2, Episode 5 of Perry Mason is titled "Chapter Thirteen" and premiered on HBO on Monday, April 3rd. While it primarily takes place in a courthouse, the latest installment features a flashback that provides crucial information about Rafael and Mateo's past. Joining the cast during the second season, the Gallardo brothers are played by actors Fabrizio Guido and Peter Mendoza.

That's just what you should do as an actor, and Peter just being so collaborative, and just being able to hang out with myself or Stephanie on or outside of set and really try to form this bond—we knew how important that was. It was supernatural. I think our first meeting was actually through Zoom, because I was out of town. I remember we had this really long conversation about both our upbringings and just our life in general and backstory and where we grew up.

This story is very reminiscent of Chavez Ravine. Knowing about that community that had been ripped from their homes for progress and how they're kind of echoing it decades before, I just felt it was so interesting to know a little bit more about it and how empowered you are yourself. Of just knowing that you have a voice and how important it is to fight for, or at least represent, the truth of what it's like to be a Latino American in either Los Angeles or in the States in general.

We learn more about the Gallardo family’s backstory this week and why they hate Brooks McCutcheon so much. This story feels particularly relevant as the United States continues to displace immigrant communities for these very reasons. Can you speak a little bit about this and how it resonates both in Perry Mason’s timeline and with our own modern-day issues?

That has become an interesting kind of dilemma to face while we were working on this, of how to find the humanity, but also the anger and the pain that they feel and the shame that they also feel of, "I can't take care of my brother. My brother is a victim of myself, in some ways. My family is a victim of my lack of understanding and the consequences of my choices." It was just so interesting working on this. It was always, "It's not about me, it's about them.

Spinning off of that last question, justice as a theme is important to the show, but this iteration of Perry Mason makes it clear that “justice” isn’t necessarily black-and-white. What do you think this season’s overarching message about justice is saying?
