The new Xbox Developer Direct has finally revealed more details for the upcoming Fable reboot, including the long-awaited release date for the game. Originally unveiled in 2020, the upcoming installment comes courtesy of Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series.
Per the Xbox Developer Direct livestream on YouTube, Fable will release on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation in Autumn 2026. The new game promises a wide variety of features, including fully customizable characters and open-world exploration. It also promises a newly revamped morality system, focusing less on good versus evil and more on the subtle impact of witnessed deeds. Fable Promises A Lot For Autumn 2026 Playground is intent on stressing the game's allegiance to the classic Fable vibe, with a focus on the possibilities of what it means to be a hero. Classic enemies like Hobbes and Trolls are returning, and Playground assures fans that there will be"quite a few chickens." Thanks to Playground's open-world expertise, there's obviously a major graphical step-up from past Fable games, and the showcase highlights quite a few gorgeous vistas. This time, it's a proper open-world experience across the board, allowing free exploration of Albion. Within that context, there are over a thousand NPCs , and it's possible for the hero to buy any house or business. It's Looking Good So Far The most exciting element of Fable is its apparent reactivity, which could actually fulfill the inherent potential that the series has always invoked. The Developer Direct offers the example of choosing to kill or spare a giant, which will then have an impact on housing prices nearby. Delivering on these promises in full will be the challenge, of course, and Playground is making a big leap from the world of racing games to tackle this project. Now that the release window is actually on the horizon, there's enough real gameplay footage to back up its ambitions, and everything shown at the Direct is looking pretty impressive. The promise of a simultaneous release on PlayStation 5 is also huge, bringing the game to a much larger market than previous Xbox exclusives. If all goes well, Fable could be the next major fantasy RPG to take the world by storm.
