The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for downtown Columbus during the highly anticipated Red, White & BOOM!
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction for downtown Columbus during the highly anticipated Red, White & BOOM! celebration on July 3. The move is aimed at safeguarding attendees and ensuring public safety during one of the region’s largest Independence Day events.
Effective from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on July 3, the TFR prohibits all unmanned aircraft systems , including recreational and commercial drones, from operating within a one-nautical-mile radius of Genoa Park. The restriction extends from the ground up to 1,000 feet above ground level. According to the FAA, only those with explicit authorization will be permitted to fly within the restricted airspace. A Notice to Air Missions detailing the flight restriction has been posted online atViolators of the TFR face serious consequences. Under federal law—specifically 10 USC 130i and 6 USC 124n—the government reserves the right to interfere with, seize, or destroy any unmanned aircraft perceived as a legitimate threat to public safety or critical infrastructure. In addition to potential federal charges, drone operators may be subject to state penalties under Ohio Revised Code sections 4561.15 and 4561.51. Local and federal law enforcement are urging drone operators to respect the restrictions and prioritize safety. Enforcement personnel will be monitoring the area throughout the day, and violators risk interception, detention, or criminal prosecution. Red, White & BOOM! draws hundreds of thousands of spectators each year and features fireworks, live music, and family-friendly entertainment. Organizers say the flight restriction is a necessary measure to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
