A $3 million settlement has been preliminarily approved to compensate fans affected by the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix manhole cover incident that halted practice and caused ticket holder disruptions.
Formula 1 leadership has agreed to allocate $3 million to assist individuals impacted by the incident that occurred during the Las Vegas Grand Prix three years ago, according to court documents reviewed by The California Post.
The incident involved a loose manhole cover that halted the first free practice session prematurely before the race. The final class action settlement is pending judicial approval at a hearing scheduled for November, though a federal judge in Nevada granted preliminary approval on March 9. The settlement aims to provide compensation to fans while avoiding prolonged litigation that could diminish or erase recoveries. Attorney Nicholas Dimopoulos, representing affected fans, stated the proposed settlement balances immediate meaningful compensation with certainty.
The chaos unfolded during a practice run on November 16, 2023, when Carlos Sainz Jr. struck a drain cover, causing significant damage to his Ferrari. Officials required hours to repair the issue, leading many ticket holders to leave before the resumed session. The initial remedies offered by race officials, including $200 merchandise vouchers, were deemed insufficient by Dimopoulos, who helped file the class action suit shortly after the event.
The settlement establishes a $3.05 million common fund for approximately 32,000 eligible ticket holders. Individual payments will vary based on ticket type, participation rates, attorney fees, costs, and administrative expenses. Eligible class members identified by Las Vegas Grand Prix and Ticketmaster records are expected to receive automatic payments, while others may need to submit claim forms. Despite the disruption, the Las Vegas Grand Prix proceeded in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and is slated to continue annually through 2032
