Here's Aston Martin's new 2022 F1 car
► Here's when you'll see the new cars, it’s time to look ahead to the 2022 season, which kicks off in Bahrain on 20 March. Especially now the teams have begun to reveal their new cars - starting with the Haas VF-22.
Car reveals can often be a fairly low key affair in F1. But they're getting turned up a notch for 2022, thanks to wide-ranging rule changes implemented in a bid to promote better, closer racing. Delayed a year because of the covid pandemic, the changes are expected to result in cleaner aero packages with bigger front wings, larger 18-inch wheels, and curvaceous rear wings with so-called ‘rolled tips’ replacing the vertical uprights seen before. We got our first look at what the 2022 cars could look like at the British Grand Prix last summer. And, that particular car’s garish paint job aside, the changes are clearly a big deal.
The primary reason for the aerodynamic changes is to promote close racing and overtaking. This is primarily driven by a revised aero package that reduces the amount of downforce lost when cars closely follow one another. Currently, an F1 car loses around 35% of its downforce when 20 metres behind an opponent, which increases to a 47% loss when 10 metres behind. For 2022, it is estimated these losses will tumble to four percent and 18% respectively.
With development of the previous car abandoned early in order for the team to refocus on this year’s effort, here’s wondering whether the VF-22 will manage better than the zero points score and uncontested last place finish of the VF-21.Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will contest the 2022 championship in the new Red Bull RB17. However, the Milton Keynes team chose to reveal a liveried version of the F1 2022 show car, rather than something close to the design it'll race next year.
