Lt. Col. William 'Skate' Parks receives the Silver Star for his exceptional bravery during a high-risk mission where he faced intense enemy fire, saved lives, and crippled enemy capabilities. His actions and leadership led to the success of a crucial mission in the Middle East.

Lt. Col. William Skate Parks, an Air Force F-16 commander, has been awarded the Silver Star , a prestigious honor for valor in combat. The recognition stems from his actions during a high-risk mission in early 2025, where he deliberately flew into a heavily defended air-defense zone in the Middle East.

Parks' courage and skill under fire were crucial in crippling enemy ballistic missile production facilities, saving the lives of his wingman, and potentially preventing the loss of two American aircraft. The Silver Star was presented to Parks during a ceremony at the Pentagon on November 26. \During the mission, Parks served as the commander of the 480th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron and led a 21-aircraft strike package. Simultaneously, he commanded a four-ship of F-16 Fighting Falcons tasked with Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses, a critical role in drawing enemy fire and clearing a path for the rest of the force. The Air Force citation highlights Parks' intentional decision to place himself in the threat range, which was key to the mission's success. This courageous act resulted in a barrage of precisely targeted missiles and anti-aircraft fire directed at his F-16s. Parks skillfully navigated a 15-minute sequence of high-G maneuvers and countermeasures, with enemy missiles detonating close to his aircraft. His actions were critical, as they not only allowed the mission to succeed but also directly contributed to the survival of his wingman and himself. Even after the barrage stopped, Parks was deep within enemy territory and dangerously low on fuel. He swiftly coordinated an emergency rendezvous with two separate tankers, which, according to the Air Force, likely averted the loss of two additional aircraft. General Ken Wilsbach, Air Force Chief of Staff, emphasized the rarity of the Silver Star, noting that less than 100 have been awarded during the Air Force era. Parks' exceptional leadership, decisive action, and skill in the face of grave danger earned him this distinguished honor.\Parks' mission took place during an eight-month deployment, where the 480th EFS supported various operations focused on countering Iranian-backed militants and hostile drone and missile threats. The squadron achieved a modern Air Force record with 108 aerial victories against enemy drones and land-attack cruise missiles during this deployment. Parks is also recognized for his innovative cost-saving tactics. He pioneered the use of AGR-20F rockets in an air-to-air role, traditionally air-to-ground weapons, and prioritized older AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles over newer variants. These strategic decisions resulted in savings of over $25 million and the first AIM-9M air-to-air kill in three decades. Six of the squadron's 108 shootdowns were specifically credited with protecting the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its crew. Speaking at the ceremony, Parks described the mission's emotional impact, the feeling of isolation over enemy territory, and the relief of hearing friendly voices on the radio as he escaped the threat. He emphasized the significance of the award, given his family's deep aviation legacy, which spans multiple generations and wars. Parks also received the Bronze Star Medal during the event. The award is a testament to his bravery, quick thinking, and leadership in a critical combat scenario. His actions demonstrated extraordinary courage and skill under extreme pressure, making him a true example of valor in the United States Air Force
