While the F-15E now joins its newer sibling, the F-15EX Eagle II, in receiving this sophisticated upgrade, the number of aircraft that will ultimately benefit from this enhancement remains to be determined.The first operational F-15E equipped with the Eagle Passive/Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) made its debut at the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, England, on January 15th. A video released by Boeing showcased the jet's departure from San Antonio, Texas, where BAE Systems implemented the advanced upgrades. EPAWSS acts as a game-changer for the F-15E, significantly boosting pilot situational awareness. It possesses the advanced capability to autonomously detect, identify, and counteract enemy threats. The need for EPAWSS arose due to the increasingly sophisticated air defense systems developed by high-end adversaries like China and Russia, capable of posing formidable challenges to aircraft relying on outdated technology. EPAWSS replaces the antiquated AN/ALQ-135 TEWS and revitalizes the F-15E with several structural and functional enhancements. This enhanced awareness enables crews to more effectively manage battlefield engagements, utilizing EPAWSS's offensive capabilities to deploy countermeasures and coordinate attacks against threats. While the system also possesses the potential to manage infrared threats, the current configuration of the F-15Es does not include missile approach warning systems (MAWS), which would further augment its defensive capabilities.The Eagle Passive/Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) not only enhances the current capabilities of the F-15E Strike Eagle but is also engineered for future adaptability.
