A nail-biting video from Portage Lake early Monday evening shows the moment the Portage Lake Glacier calved leaving two people stranded.
“I started recording to get the noises and about a second later, a huge chunk of ice fell off and I started skating away as quickly as I could,” eyewitness Lauren Jobe said. At around 4:30 p.m., Girdwood Fire and Rescue received a call for the two bystanders who had been stranded on a rock near the glacier.
Jobe was able to see them from where she had narrowly avoided being stranded herself. “They were kind of a little more off to the side than I was, and I saw them jump up onto the rocks and my friend and I kind of copied their idea and jumped on them,” she explained.by Alaska State Troopers the people involved had been rescued by “good samaritan ice climbers” and everyone was safe and uninjured. Michelle Weston of Girdwood Fire and Rescue says today’s event is a good reminder to always be prepared when exploring Alaska’s great outdoors. “Just a reminder to make sure that you have a plan of how you’re going to self-rescue each other. That you have an emergency medical kit with you, that you have an in-reach or a satellite phone because there’s no cell service out there,” Weston explained.
