The fitness industry is growing by leaps and bounds in the United States, with more than 60 million of us owning a gym membership. James Barber hopes to capitalize on this trend. The 39-year-old trainer from Concord has just moved into the Montclair Village space vacated last month by the home goods store Mix. Barber’s own ‘mix’ of clients includes several who started with him when he was part of a collective of trainers at The Institute on Mountain Boulevard.

“I love the feel of the Montclair vibe; I like the people here,” says Barber. He says the community here doesn’t just want a hard workout but a little bit more. Hills club member Jeff Everett says the charismatic coach adds a lot of fun to the Masters workouts, with underwater ball-passing drills that are more fun than they sound. Somov’s debut trip to the Olympics was aided by a GoFundMe account that raised almost $27,000 so he could compete as an “individual neutral athlete” and not on behalf of his birth country, Russia.Ji the Atilier will celebrate its first anniversary in Montclair Village on Aug.
